Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation

For as long as anyone can remember, society has put a focus on the female breast which, like no other organ, serves as a symbol of femininity, sensuality, motherhood and, not least, beauty. This focus thus also extends to the changes that breasts undergo over a lifetime. First and foremost, it is natural causes, including cyclically-occurring PMS, and the effects of pregnancies, breastfeeding and menopause, as well as aging, that cause these constant changes. But disease, physical strain and weight fluctuations also have a noticeable effect on the shape of the breast. Sagging breasts following breastfeeding, loose breast tissue at the heels of a major weight loss, the aftereffects of injuries and breasts that are perceived as being too small can chip away at a woman’s self-confidence. Cosmetic treatment, as the name implies, offers only superficial care; it can do nothing to alleviate the above-described conditions. Breast Augmentation – (Breast Enlargement)

Nowadays, augmenting breast size by means of silicone implants is a standard, highly effective procedure. The implants that are approved for use in Germany are bio-compatible and certified. Breast implant safety has been significantly enhanced owing to a multi-layer implant shell and the use of cohesive, cross-linked silicone bonds (for medical purposes).

Generally two types of implants are used:
– Round or anatomically-shaped (tear-drop) implants
– Half-round implants

The following surgical procedures have proven effective for breast augmentation:
– Inframammary fold (in the breast crease) incision
– Transaxillary (incision in the armpit)
– Incision at the edge of the areola (periareolar / transareolar)

Regardless of the surgical method used, the implant is either deposited behind or in front of the breast muscle. A more natural appearance is achieved by placing the implant behind the breast muscle, in which case the implant is fully covered by the breast muscle. Certain conditions may make the positioning of the implant in front of the breast muscle advantageous. In either case, the natural appearance of the breast is preserved.

Any kind of breast operation is carried out under general anesthesia. Post-operative treatment includes the monitoring of the wound healing process and the wearing of a special bra. Mild physical activity is possible after 4 weeks though swimming and sunbathing should be discontinued for several months.

General risks of surgery

  • temporary effects of surgery may include swelling, bruising, pain, loss of sensation and/or restriction of movement.
  • bleeding, infection, wound healing disorders
  • side effects from local or general anesthesia.
  • thrombosis and embolism (especially among smokers and overweight individuals).
